About Studio Rumble

You found us!  Hi there, and welcome to the current home of Studio Rumble on the web.  Not much to look at, but that can be deceptive!

This site is an outlet for the Studio Rumble community, a group of game developers and friends that enjoy making and playing games of all types.  Although the majority of our members work in the video game industry, as individuals and friends we represent a wide cross-section of society at large — if skewed a bit toward subjects like technology, expression, erudition, and humanism seen through the lens of games.

Additionally-popular subjects include ‘nerd’ topics of all kind, from board games to ‘genre’ subculture.  We really, truly love to the power of games to enrich lives, and we’ve organized some incredible tournaments [100+ game developer studio teams in a League of Legends tournament?  That should be easy, right guys? - Us at several points in what feel like the ancient, naïve corridors of history.]

We’ve had some painful, shared tragedies, but every time a layoff or other setback has afflicted our members, this community has demonstrated the perfect combination of willingness and ability to help one another out on a scale that frequently defies belief among external observers.  On the flip side, we’ve had some incredible successes and we look forward to continuing that trend far into the future.

Notable events and highlights:
-Successful completion of multiple tournaments, spanning games from Valve’s Team Fortress 2 to Riot’s League of Legends with all kinds of tomfoolery in between.
-Thousands upon thousands of hours of rewarding co-op and competitive game sessions, interacting with each other and fans across the industry.
-Dozens of titles released at dozens of studios by members living and working all around the globe to push the Video Game Industry (and humanity at large) forward.
-Hosting thousands of players on our public game servers over the years, and hundreds of players on our semi-public Mumble server.
-Streaming notable events like Studio Rumble Tournaments to fan and participant audiences in the thousands (over 6000 viewers for our Riot vs. Riot LoL tournament finals!) all built on services developed ‘in-house’ and on a volunteer/grassroots basis by our members.

If you’re a fan of video games and you’ve participated in their enjoyment over the last 6 years, the odds are astronomically high that you have played a game touched by one or more members of our ‘family.’  We are thrilled and proud to count all the flavors of ‘game developer’ among our ranks: programmers; producers; system administrators; technical artists; concept artists; comic artists†; analysts; animators; modelers; modders; community managers; technologists; evangelists; and more types of designer and software engineer than you can hit with two nerfbats.  Member studios range from populations in the single digits to over a thousand, and everyone is treated according to one of the oldest great rules in the game of life and Wil Wheaton’s Law with no exceptions made for anyone regardless of their title, tenure, or taste in recreational pursuits.  We are platform-agnostic but the core of the group’s day-to-day presence is based around Valve’s Steam.

We have a very active core group whose social ‘circle’ casts a very very wide net across the.. well.. ‘Net.  Our team of group administrators treads the line between flippant and dutiful with great dedication, and we pride ourselves on our receptiveness to new members‡.  Responses to membership requests are generally congenial and swift; we have leadership on both coasts of the US and in-between, with active members at nearly all hours.  If you’re interested in joining us on Valve’s Steam platform, the group page can be found here:  TF2 Studio Rumble 2007  Don’t be fooled by the outdated name: it’s kind of a running joke that helps us remember our origins — that and you can’t change group names, which made the decision to keep it pretty clear-cut.

If you want a ‘shortest path’ link to one of our administrators, your best bets are one of these jackalopes:

We’d love to hear from you with questions, comments, kudos, or rants.  Aside from that, have a wonderful day making life more fun for everyone — that’s our plan, anyway.
†Somewhere along the line we got lucky and snagged ourselves a Nerfnow

‡Membership is generally kept to developers and other participants in the Video Game Industry but this is not a hard-and-fast requirement.
